Turning A Dreamcast VMU & Controller Into the Ultimate Emulation Portable

Possibly the coolest (and underutilized) console accessory of all time is the Visual Memory Unit (VMU) for the Sega Dreamcast.

The console itself came out when I was just entering high school and just experienced the wonders of a broadband internet connection. The hours I put into that console are some of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Now Wermy of Sudomod, a famous Raspberry Pi gadget maker and Youtuber has released his latest creation: a RetroPi crammed into a VMU that can still fit into an original Dreamcast controller that provides charging/extra battery and 6 button connectivity. Watch the walkthrough video here and prepare to be amazed:

The attention to detail and scope just blew me away. I’ve always wanted to build a custom portable emulator system but this just stepped up the game to a whole new level.

Cheers, Ty
